Indications and Contraindications to Massage

Indications For Massage – Massage would usually benefit conditions on this list:

  • Allergy symptoms
  • Anxiety
  • Asthma (take precautions)
  • Biomechanical imbalance
  • Blurry vision (acute--not chronic)
  • Body-image distortion
  • Breathing difficulty (not due to infection)
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Cellulite
  • Chilly frequently
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Constipation (abdominal massage)
  • Dental problems or recent lengthy procedures (facial and neck muscles)
  • Depression
  • Ear infection sensation without any infection present
  • Eczema (lymphatic drainage only, in direction of lymph flow). True eczema is NOT contagious.
  • Edema (lymphatic drainage only, in direction of lymph flow - applies to edema not caused by disease/infection)
  • Fatigue
  • Fibromyalgia (client preferences are honored as best as possible)
  • Flat foot arches
  • Forward Head Posture
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Headaches (including migraines)
  • Heel spurs
  • Immune system deficiency
  • Insomnia
  • Joint stiffness
  • Low back pain
  • Lymphatic congestion (lymph fluid not draining)
  • Mental fuzziness
  • Menstrual cycle issues
  • Migraines
  • “Military back”
  • “Military neck”
  • Muscle spasms
  • Muscle strain
  • Nausea where there has been no vomiting
  • Neck & shoulder pain/stiffness
  • Nervous tension
  • Numbness or tingling in limbs or fingers (depending on cause - may need Dr’s note)
  • One side of the face is drooping slightly
  • Osteoarthritis (take precautions)
  • Pain between shoulder blades
  • Parkinson’s
  • PMS (in most cases)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorders
  • Prostate problem-like symptoms (with doctor’s note)
  • Pregnancy (beyond the 13th week) (observe precautions)
  • Range-of-motion limitations
  • Referring pain (limbs, back, thorax, etc - as long as it’s muscular in nature)
  • Repetitive strain injuries
  • Sacro-iliac (SI) joint problems
  • Scar tissue
  • Sciatica
  • Shin splint sensation
  • Sinus problems
  • “skunky” odor on body (lymphatic drainage)
  • Slight dizziness, blah feeling
  • Soreness
  • Stress
  • Temporo-mandibular joint problems (TMJ)
  • Tension
  • Terminal cancer
  • Thoracic outlet syndrome
  • Tooth pain without infection/cavity
  • Trigger points
  • Visual auras
  • Whiplash (after a few days, with chiropractor’s note)

Contraindications for Massage - Massage may either be inadvisable OR precaution must be taken for conditions on this list.

  • AIDS/HIV (over open areas, or in cases of secondary conditions or under-the-weather)
  • Aneurism (do not massage)
  • Appendicitis (do not massage)
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Boils
  • Bronchitis (do not massage, unless doctor’s note states client is definitely not contagious can can handle massage)
  • Broken bones (avoid area, may need doctor’s note)
  • Bruises (local contraindication)
  • Cancer (doctor’s note, not necessarily an absolute contraindication)
  • Common cold/flu/influenza (do not massage)
  • Contagious skin condition (chicken pox, scabies, lice, poison ivy, etc) (do not massage)
  • Diabetes (extra caution, may need doctor’s note)
  • Epilepsy/seizures (do not massage unless doctor’s note says OK)
  • Fever (do not massage)
  • Fungus (avoid area)
  • Gangrene (needs doctor’s note)
  • Gout (needs doctor’s note)
  • Heart disease (needs doctor’s note)
  • Hepatitis (can massage with a doctor’s note)
  • Hernia (avoid area)
  • Herniated disks (not absolute, need doctor’s note)
  • Herpes (avoid area)
  • Infectious disease (do not massage)
  • Inflammation (local, unless inflammation is systemic)
  • Kidney failure (do not massage)
  • Liver failure (do not massage)
  • Mental instability - moderate to severe (do not massage)
  • Moderate to severe indigestion after a large meal (do not massage)
  • Nausea where there has been vomiting (do not massage)
  • Open skin/cuts/scrapes/weeping rashes (avoid affected area)
  • Phlebitis/thrombosis (do not massage)
  • Pregnancy before the 13th week (needs doctor’s note)
  • Ringworm (do not massage)
  • Sprain (avoid area)
  • Sunburn (avoid areas with more than mild redness)
  • Swelling/burning (avoid area, unless severe and/or systemic)
  • Torn muscles (avoid area)
  • Torn tendons (avoid area)
  • Tuberculosis (do not massage)
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure (needs doctor’s note)
  • Varicose veins (either avoid or use very light pressure over area)
  • Warts (avoid area)
  • Whiplash, acute (needs chiropractor’s note)
